A City of Edmonton program offering homeowners financial incentives to install solar panels is no longer accepting applications because it has run out of money.

The Edmonton Solar Rebate Program has run out of funds, closing after just six weeks due to high demand. Since its launch on May 8, over 700 homeowners applied for the program, fully committing nearly $2 million in rebates. This rapid subscription underscores the growing interest in solar energy within Edmonton, helping the city progress towards its goal of becoming net-zero by 2050.
To date, the program has supported around 1,900 households with approximately $6 million in total rebates. The rebate provided homeowners with $0.40 per watt, covering about 15% of installation costs, averaging around $2,800 per household.
For those who missed out, the city plans to launch a new program in 2024. In the meantime, homeowners are encouraged to explore other incentives, such as the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, which offers grants up to $5,000 and interest-free loans up to $40,000 for home energy improvements. This proactive approach ensures continued progress towards Edmonton's sustainability targets.
